The New, Super-Zoom PowerShot SX700 HS and Waterproof PowerShot D30 Digital Cameras Deliver Outstanding Performance and Versatility

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 11, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of the new super-zoom PowerShot SX700 HS and the adventure-ready, waterproof PowerShot D30 to the PowerShot line of compact digital cameras.

Canon Powershot SX700HS Digital Camera

Canon Powershot SX700HS Digital Camera

The stylish and pocket-sized PowerShot SX700 HS camera features an impressive 30x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 25-750mm zoom range), built-in Wi-Fi®, and Near Field Communication (NFC™)1 capabilities helping to ensure high-quality images can be captured and easily shared. This focal range will allow a user to be able to photograph a flower that is close but also have the zoom to capture an image of wildlife that is in the distance – all in a compact camera. The new PowerShot D30 camera is the world’s deepest waterproof camera*, allowing for shooting up to 82 feet below sea level. This ready-for-adventure camera is also shockproof and cold and heat resistant. Both cameras produce breathtaking low-light images and offer 1080p full high-definition video so moving and still images can be clearly captured in many different environments.

“With the PowerShot SX700 HS camera’s incredible long-zoom capabilities and the PowerShot D30 camera’s ability to shoot underwater at a world-record depth of 82 feet, these cameras are capable of inspiring creativity when photographing wildlife, marine-life or everyday adventures,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “In addition, consumers now have two excellent new digital camera options that allow them to create images and video that are not only high in quality, but easy and fun to use.”

The PowerShot SX700 HS Digital Camera

The 30x optical zoom PowerShot SX700 HS camera combines a 16.1 megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 6 Image Processor to create the Canon HS SYSTEM -allowing for excellent low-light performance. With Canon’s Intelligent IS, the PowerShot SX700 HS camera automatically chooses from various settings to help optimize image stabilization for the shooting condition.

The Wi-Fi® connectivity options in the PowerShot SX700 HS camera allows users to easily share beautiful images online with family and friends. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a Wi-Fi enabled computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon iMAGE GATEWAY through the cloud2. For easy Wi-Fi connectivity, built-in NFC™ allows quick and simple pairing to compatible Android™devices. With NFC, users press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC-enabled Android device to the PowerShot SX700 HS camera to send images from the camera to their compatible smartphone with ease. For even more convenience, photographers can control the camera remotely via the free Canon Camera Window app3 from virtually anywhere with their compatible iOS® or Android device3. After composing the image, the photographer controls the shutter from their compatible smartphone, so that the photographer can be included in the shot.

Zoom Framing Assist Auto has been enhanced to make it easier to keep a subject that is at a far distance in the frame of view. The camera also records high-quality 1080p/60p Full HD video through a dedicated movie button. The Hybrid AUTO mode allows users to record up-to four seconds of video every time a still image is taken, and then automatically joins the clips and pictures into a video that captures the essence of a vacation, an important event, or any time you are shooting many shots in a day. Hybrid Auto automatically recognizes the scene and optimizes camera settings to capture the highest possible image quality to create a great looking highlight reel in 720p HD video.

The PowerShot SX700 HS camera also features Creative Shot mode. Creative Shot mode is an easy yet powerful tool to add artistic effects to photos. In Creative Shot mode, users compose a shot and the camera analyzes the photo to apply a series of artistic elements. Creative Shot mode includes four categories with 46 filters total. The four filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special, and Natural. Before an image is captured, users choose one of the four filter types and Creative Shot will automatically render five different variations of the shot in different composition, color and lighting styles, delivering creative, new perspectives automatically while still maintaining the original image.

The PowerShot D30 camera is also temperature-resistant from 14 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit and shockproof to 6.5 feet. A great travel companion, the PowerShot D30 camera’s built-in GPS** tracker remembers where and when photos were taken so images can be captured along with the date, time and location of each moment.

With its sleek design and comfortable grip, the PowerShot D30 camera can quickly adapt from under-to-above-water shooting environments through the camera’s new Sunlight LCD mode. A model equipped with a large 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor and a fast lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of three new COOLPIX P-series models, the P600, P530, and P340. The COOLPIX P series is a line of multi-functional, high-performance compact digital cameras that enable full-scale photography.

Nikon P600

Nikon P600

Nikon P530

Nikon P530

The P600 and P530 are compact models equipped with high zoom-ratio lenses that support capture of a wide variety of scenes with a single camera. Despite being equipped with a 60x (up to 120x*1 with Dynamic Fine Zoom) optical zoom NIKKOR lens offering the highest zoom ratio in COOLPIX history with coverage of a broad range of angles of view, from the wide-angle 24mm to super-telephoto 1440mm (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), the P600 is very compact. The NIKKOR lens built into the P600 is also the first COOLPIX lens for which a super ED lens element has been adopted for superior image quality. The P530 is equipped with a 42x (up to 84x*1 with Dynamic Fine Zoom) optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of angles of view from wide-angle 24mm to super-telephoto 1000mm (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), and a high-resolution, 3-inch, approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor with wide viewing angle. New scene modes, Moon and Bird-watching, have been added to both of these models, allowing users to easily enjoy super-telephoto photography. In addition, these cameras are equipped with a high-performance lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a shutter speed 3.5-stops*2 faster and an Active option for effective reduction of blur caused by camera shake with recording of still images and movies. Offering faster AF and a shorter shooting time lag, these cameras ensure capture of the desired moment with quick and nimble focusing. On its own, each of these compact cameras is packed with advanced functions that support photography of a wide variety of scenes, from super-telephoto to wide-angle and macro photography.

Nikon P340

The P340 features a simple, refined design, and its combination of a fast lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 and large, 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor achieves superior rendering characteristics. It is equipped with a 5x (up to 10x*1 with Dynamic Fine Zoom) optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 24mm to telephoto 120mm range of angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format) that also enables macro photography as close as 2 cm to the lens. It offers superior operation with adoption of a control ring around the lens barrel, to which a variety of functions can be assigned, and which can be used to fine-tune effects applied in scene modes and Special Effects mode.

In addition, the P600 and P340 offer built-in Wi-Fi® that can be used to easily transfer photos to a smart device for sharing with others*3. This allows users to enjoy connecting with others through their photos after they are taken.

  • *1At the maximum image size.
  • *2Measured at approximately 350mm (equivalent in 35mm [135] format) in accordance with CIPA standards.
  • *3The Wireless Mobile Utility app must first be installed on the smart device (the app can be downloaded free of charge from the smart device’s app store), and Wi-Fi® connection settings must be applied before image transfer is possible.

Five Cyber-shots debut including 50x zoom Sony HX400V, the RX10 alternative for the budget-minded

By: Mike Tomkins February 11, 2014 (http://www.imaging-resource.com)

Sony has just lanched five new Cyber-shot camera models for the CP+ tradeshow in Japan. The Sony HX400V ultrazoom is the most fully-featured, while the Sony H400 and Sony H300 pare down on features and cost. The Sony WX350 puts a big lens in a pocket camera, and the Sony W800 focuses on photographers for whom a bank balance is the big decider.

Let’s start with the most interesting of the group. Did you feel a tingling in your wallet when Sony announced its RX10 large-sensor, long-zoom camera, but you just couldn’t justify the cost? If so, the company’s hoping you’ll be willing to forgo the lustworthy sensor and lens pairing of that camera, in favor of the just-announced HX400 ultrazoom. With similarly SLR-like styling, the 20.4-megapixel Sony HX400V is aimed at photographers who’re still looking for a reasonably sophisticated feature set, but who don’t want the bulk and complexity of interchangeable lenses or the cost and relatively more limited zoom range of the enthusiast-friendly flagship.

New Olympus® SP-100 Is a Super Zoom with an Eagle’s Eye for capturing distant action

NEW OLYMPUS® SP-100 IS A SUPER-ZOOM WITH AN EAGLE’S EYE FOR CAPTURING DISTANT ACTION

The SP-100 Is the First Camera with a Built-In Dot-Sight* for Easy Framing, Electronic Viewfinder, Improved Grip and Refined Controls for Outstanding Telephoto Results

Olympus SP-100 Ultra Zoom Camera

Olympus SP-100 Ultra Zoom Camera

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., January 29, 2014 — Olympus introduces a breakthrough in its Ultra Zoom camera line-up with the new STYLUS® SP-100, the world’s first-ever camera with a built-in dot-sight*, enabling you to easily track moving subjects, like a soccer game or a flying bird. This technology will allow you to record smoother videos and will help you to not lose sight of your subject. Once the subject is still, then you can frame and shoot. The dot-sight combines with the SP-100’s newly developed 24-1200mm** 50x optical Ultra Zoom lens, or 2400mm 100x Super Resolution zoom, for capturing detailed shots of moving, distant subjects.

The SP-100’s dot-sight is mounted just above the built-in high-resolution, 920,000-dot, bright LCD Electronic View Finder and helps the user keep the subject in the frame by offering a wide-angle view of the scene on its semitransparent mirror. The dot-sight stows away for portability and pops up immediately to easily track any subject without the need to adjust the zoom, so the shooter never has to miss another image by having to retrace and compose. Olympus carefully designed the location of the EVF and the shape of the eyepiece for minimal contact between the photographer’s face and the camera body, giving even greater ease of shooting.

The high-performance optics combine with a 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a next-generation TruePic VII processor to get the very best out of every shot, regardless of lighting conditions or subject movement. The SP-100’s powerful lens shift image stabilization mechanism significantly reduces camera shake even at the highest zoom. Image stabilization is also effective in the Super Macro function when approaching subjects as close as 1 centimeter, even with the 50x optical zoom.

A new focus-limit button lets users focus only in a set range when turned on, and focus only in the distance when set to off. The SP-100 is also equipped with an AF lock feature and manual focusing. A full range of shooting manual modes (P/A/S/M) is also available for customization of exposure parameters like ISO, shutter speed and aperture via the sub dial. The deep grip provides optimal handling during shooting, while the quick-response, single-finger-operation control dial optimizes fast shooting when using the high-resolution electronic viewfinder. The camera includes an additional zoom lever on the left side of the lens, enabling users to hold the camera securely like a DSLR for left-thumb operation of the zoom while operating the shutter button with the right index finger.

The SP-100 captures video with natural motion in smooth 60p recording at 60 frames per second in full HD (1080) and high-speed recording (HS120fps with resolution of 640×480, or HS240fps with 320×240). The Multi-Motion Movie image stabilization compensates for blurring that occurs when shooting video while walking or panning across a scene.

Users can add additional creative expression through eleven available Art Filters that can also be used when shooting Full HD movies. The optional Toshiba FlashAir™ card connects the camera to a Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone or PC to easily import, view and share images.

Samsung reveals Galaxy Camera 2 ahead of CES 2014

By Lexy Savvides   |   January 3, 2014 (http://www.cnet.com.au/)

The first model is the successor to the Galaxy Camera, an Android-powered hybrid that merges the photo-taking prowess of a traditional camera with the connectivity of a smartphone. Called the Galaxy Camera 2, the new model has the same 21x zoom lens and 16-megapixel sensor as its predeecessor, though it comes with a faster 1.6GHz processor and 2GB of RAM.

On top of this, the camera runs Android Jellybean 4.3 and comes with NFC for easier pairing with other connected devices. Like the earlier model, the new version has a 4.8-inch touchscreen at the back for composing, reviewing, sharing and editing photos. A microphone and headphone jack make it convenient for use as a media player or Skype-ready handset, though you can’t make actual phone calls from the camera.

Also announced was the NX30, an update to its NX range of interchangeable lens cameras. It comes with an electronic viewfinder, 20.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, dual image stabilisation for video recording and a very useful feature of being able to output a clean HDMI feed.

94x zoom lens patented—is a Canon SX100 planned?

By Mike Tomkins, December 27, 2013 (http://www.imaging-resource.com)

Photographers looking for the ultimate in image quality might avoid zoom lenses like the plague, but the popularity of increasingly long-zoom cameras suggests that some people just can’t get enough telephoto reach. If you’re in their number, you may find the promise of a recent patent filing by Canon Japan to be rather thrilling.

Admittedly, most patents make for somewhat dry reading, but this one, uncovered by Japanese engineering blog Egami, suggests that Canon could soon offer a camera with close to a 100x zoom range. (Given that the existing Canon SX50 HS sports a ~50x zoom, Egami cheekily suggests the name Canon SX100 HS for a followup, tagging its image on the lens diagram with the moniker.)
