This week Panasonic introduced the world to its most compact LUMIX G series interchangeable lens camera with the introduction of the 16 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF6.  The new compact mirrorless camera has highlighted features that include Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n) support that’s integrated with the newly popular NFC (Near Field Communication) technology which you can find in many of the new smartphones being sold today.

According to Panasonic the new GF6 camera will use both Wi-Fi and NFC to allow users to wirelessly share photos as well as capture images with the GF6 remotely using devices like smartphones or tablets. In recent years noticeable number of new digital cameras have been released with the built-in ability to wirelessly send photos captured with digital cameras to computers or other Wi-Fi enabled devices, the GF6 is the first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to have both Wi-Fi and NFC support built-in.

With the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF6 consumers will be able to leverage the Wi-Fi and NFC technologies in the following ways:

  • Panasonic’s Instant Transfer function – GF6 owners will be able to wirelessly send photos captured with their new cameras to paired smartphones or tablets the instant they release the shutter button.
  • Remote capture – With Wi-Fi and NFC working together Panasonic assures their new GF6 will be able to be used remotely by smartphone or tablets that support the two technologies (most do). With this feature you can use your smartphone/tablet as a viewfinder (with up to 30 fps picture performance) and snap pictures or start recording video without having to touch the shutter button on your camera. Range and performance for the remote capture function depends on the quality of the wireless network the paired devices are using.
  • Send photos and video to your home computer – GF6 owners aren’t limited to only using the cameras wireless file transfer functions with smartphones and tablets, files can also be sent to desktops and laptops over Wi-Fi. Users of the GF6 will need a wireless router setup and have software installed on their computers as well to make everything possible.
  • Send photos wirelessly to synced social networks like Facebook™, Flickr™, Picasa™, Twitter™ or YouTube™ with the web-based Panasonic service LUMIX CLUB.
  • Wirelessly display images on a HDTV that’s connected to a DLNA receiver box with the GF6′s built-in Wi-Fi Direct technology. DLNA is wireless content streaming technology that allows Wi-Fi Direct capable devices to wirelessly stream photos and videos onto a TV that’s connected to a DLNA receiver or has one built-in.

Fujifilm X100S Is The Best (Digital) Camera I Have Ever Used [Review]

First, remember one thing: this isn’t a full review of the Fujifilm X100S, even though I had to write it up there in the title to please our CMS. I’ve only had the thing for a few days, and even though Cult of Mac isn’t DP Review, a few days isn’t enough to evaluate an iPhone case, let alone a camera like the X100S.

On the other hand, the X100S is So Hot Right Now, and I’ve been staying up tip 3AM since I got it because I can’t stop playing with the thing. Combining those two interesting facts leads me to think that an in-depth first look might be a good idea — especially as you can now convert the RAW files on your Mac using the just-released Lightroom 4.4.

Let’s take a look — You might want to go make a cup of coffee first.

Lots to like at Leica store for camera connoisseurs

April 3, 2013 posted By Admin (http://www.downtownexpress.com)

BY BOB KRASNER | Did you hear the one about the $8,000 digital camera that only shoots in black and white? Funny, right? Leica, the revered camera manufacturer, doesn’t think so. Their M Monochrom is one of the more intriguing items in their new Soho location, which is filled with compelling merchandise for both pro and amateur shutterbugs.

The store recently opened at 460 West Broadway, between Houston and Prince Sts. It’s a collaboration between the 150-year-old manufacturer and Elliot Kurland, a Leica enthusiast and former proprietor of Kurland Photo. While the brand name instantly conjures up images of film cameras for photographers of a certain age, the company has jumped almost completely into the digital market. Although they still sell two models which use that archaic format, their focus on digital is both a leap into the modern age and a nod to the past, using classic designs to house a contemporary format.

The store’s minimalistic design space is filled not just with cameras, but books, magazines, accessories and a photo gallery. The place’s rear is designed to convert into a classroom as well. Customers are encouraged to test drive the wide variety of models available, and the extremely knowledgeable staff is more than willing to educate the consumer. Even the guy who came in and asked, “How is a Leica different from my iPhone?” got a straight answer.

Digital cameras easily turned into spying devices, researchers prove

Posted on 25 March 2013. (http://www.net-security.org)

Users’ desire to share things online has influenced many markets, including the digital camera one.

Newer cameras increasingly sport built-in Wi-Fi capabilities or allow users to add SD cards to achieve them in order to be able to upload and share photos and videos as soon as they take them.

But, as proven by Daniel Mende and Pascal Turbing, security researchers with German-based IT consulting firm ERNW, these capabilities also have security flaws that can be easily exploited for turning these cameras into spying devices.

Mende and Turbing chose to compromise Canon’s EOS-1D X DSLR camera an exploit each of the four ways it can communicate with a network. Not only have they been able to hijack the information sent from the camera, but have also managed to gain complete control of it.

Sponsored by the Nordrhein Westfalen Design Center in Germany, the red dot design awards are one of the world’s most prestigious design honors. Marking the largest number of entries to date, the 2013 red dot design committee, comprised of 37 design experts from 24 different countries, evaluated over 4,600 products on nine criteria, including; degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability and ecological compatibility.

Harkening back to the original PENTAX MX film camera, the classically crafted body of the MX-1 is a unique addition to the digital camera space. Its retro design features deluxe accents and luxurious details that resonate with the design community as well as photo enthusiasts.  The versatile appeal of the MX-1 is a testament to its thoughtful design process as well as its meticulously engineered photographic capabilities.

Additionally, the MX-1 is equipped with a versatile and highly-useable zoom range 28mm wide-angle to 112 telephoto (in the 35mm format) and a 1/1.7 inch, 12.0 effective megapixel backlit CMOS sensor rendering impressive low-light performance.
